An estimated 210,000 tons of waste is sent to the Missoula landfill every year. The current Missoula landfill is due to fill up by 2035. This will cause more valuable land in the North Hills to be consumed by waste.

When organic material is sent to the landfill it is forced to decompose without appropriate oxygen resulting in the production of methane. Organics hold invaluable nutrients that are spoiled among other waste materials. By practicing a one bin waste system, we increase the growth rate of our landfill and compromise cherished local land.

Currently, we divert less than 20% of waste from the landfill. By just composting we can reduce at least 58,800 tons of organics. Diverting another 28% from the landfill will result in 48% of our resources being rescued, renewed, and reused.

Instead of tossing organic waste into the trash and letting it sit in a landfill, composting gives it a new life. By composting, we can close the loop on waste. Taking material that would've been trash and turning it into something useful for the environment.
Composting helps keep valuable nutrients cycling in the ecosystem instead of letting them go to waste. Plus, when compost is used to nourish gardens or farms, it not only helps plants grow better, but also reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, which can be harmful to the environment.

Any problem our customers have is a problem of ours and we are eager to address issues with flexible solutions. We prove to Missoula how simple and effective composting can be at reducing waste.

Missoula Compost is a local family owned business. We collect locally, compost locally, and reintorduce compost soil to Missoula. All our collections are composted at Missoula’s industrial compost facility, collections never go more than 10 miles from your pick up location. The organics are then spread back into the local environment for stronger growth and better stability.

Missoula Compost was created in efforts to help Missoula along the Zero Waste Goal that was adopted by Missoula City Council. We are working to achieve goals laid out in this sustainability plan one step at a time. By partnering with local businesses and nonprofits we are looking to transform Missoula’s waste management practices for a more sustainable city. The more composting is normalized in Missoula, the more accessible and affordable we can make it for everyone.
We want to prove to Missoula how composting can not only effectively reduce waste, but add future value by rescuing resources, building and strengthening local soil, and slowing the growth of encroaching landfills.
